Both Democrats and Republicans support tough measures.
A new bill that would impose tough sanctions on Russia's allies has received overwhelming support in the US Senate from both Republicans and Democrats.
As The Telegraph, some members of the Senate have signaled they will try to bring it to a vote without waiting for a green light from President Donald Trump.
Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal introduced a bill Wednesday to impose paralyzing sanctions on Russian allies. Its main provision is to impose a 500 percent duty on any country that buys Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products in order to stop China and others "supporting Putin's war machine."
As The Telegraph notes, 81 senators from both parties supported the bill, though any attempt to impose their views on Trump is likely to be poorly received in the White House.
Trump has warned that sanctions against Russia could cause Putin to back out of peace talks, but some Republican senators have made clear they are skeptical of Trump negotiating with the Russian leader and have said they will act without waiting for his approval.
"I'm not waiting for anything. I think we should bring this to the table and punish Putin. I've waited long enough. And it's pretty clear to me that Putin has been leading us around by the nose for months now, and I don't think the United States of America should tolerate that," said Todd Young, the senior Republican senator from Indiana."
