Media: South Korea And Poland Are Preparing A Billion-dollar Tank Deal

The new agreement will be much larger than the 2022 contract.

South Korea and Poland this month plan to finalize an agreement worth about $6 billion for the supply of Korean K2 tanks, writes Yonhap.

Poland is expected to receive 180 K2 tanks under the agreement, of which 117 units will be manufactured by South Korean defense company Hyundai Rotem and the rest by Warsaw-based state-owned enterprise PGZ.

The signing ceremony of the contract, the largest for South Korea, for arms exports will take place in Poland at the end of June. The agreement was supposed to be signed late last year, but was postponed due to internal problems in both countries.

According to the publication, the agreement is in fulfillment of a broad framework agreement from 2022 to supply Poland with 1,000 K2 tanks. In the same year, Hyundai Rotem and the Polish side signed a contract for the production of the first batch of 180 K2 tanks for Poland worth about $3.3 billion, but the parties have not signed new contracts after that.

The new agreement will be much more extensive than the 2022 contract. It will include the transfer of technology and maintenance regulations for the K2 tanks to the Poles, as well as the launch of production in Poland of the newest models of these tanks, whereas previously it was a question of the previous, somewhat outdated models.
