WSJ: U.S. Tracked Foreigners Who Visited Ilon Musk

Individuals from Eastern European countries were the object of interest.

U.S. agencies - specifically the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security - conducted surveillance on foreigners who visited entrepreneur Ilon Musk between 2022 and 2023.

This is reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing its own government sources.

The target of interest was individuals from Eastern Europe and other regions who intelligence agencies believe may have been trying to influence Musk. This is because the SpaceX founder has access to classified information, including under government contracts with U.S. national security agencies.

The investigation began under the previous administration and involved employees of several agencies, including the FBI. The current status of the case remains unknown.

Ilon Musk actively supported Donald Trump during the 2024 election campaign, spending more than $288 million through the political committee America PAC. Representatives of the committee, according to the WSJ, also studied who attended events involving Musk and filtered out foreign attendees.

In October, the WSJ also reported Musk's regular communications with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin beginning in late 2022. The Kremlin partially denied those reports, saying only one phone conversation of an "introductory nature."

After leaving the Trump administration in May, Musk criticized the president's economic policies, particularly on taxes and tariffs. This sparked a public controversy, with Trump saying he had no plans to renew contact with Musk because he was "too busy with other things."
