The administration of US President Donald Trump has abruptly reversed its policy on mass deportations and ordered a halt to raids and arrests in the agriculture, hospitality and food industries, The New York Times reported, citing sources.

It is noted that these changes come amid the administration's attempts to ramp up arrests. Recently, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Steven Miller called for 3,000 arrests daily. The number of arrests has since risen to more than 2,000 a day.
The new guidance to suspend operations came as a surprise to ICE agents, however. One official noted that officers don't yet know exactly how to implement the new policy without a clear signal from the White House.
In his letter, King explicitly acknowledged that ICE will lose many potential arrest targets because of the new restrictions.
