Politico: Trump Could Hit Russia With Sanctions In Coming Weeks

G7 leaders will try to persuade the U.S. president to act decisively.
During the G7 summit, the leaders of the countries can convince US President Donald Trump to set aside hesitation and increase sanctions pressure on Russia. This was told to Politico by Fred Fleitz, Donald Trump's former national security aide.
He said the US president feels disrespected by Vladimir Putin because of the Russian dictator's refusal to take peace talks with Ukraine seriously.
"There's a good chance that over the next few weeks Trump will stop diplomacy and hit Russia with sanctions. But he will keep the door open to restart negotiations," Trump's former national security aide Fred Fleitz told the publication in a commentary.
Analyzing the preparations for the G7 summit in Canada, the publication writes that the leaders of these countries will try to exploit Trump's mood and promote the European Commission's proposal to lower the price ceiling on Russian oil from $60 to $45 per barrel.
The authors of the article remind that on the eve of the summit, the EU has intensified its stance on strengthening sanctions against Russia and that they are supported by the UK. At the same time, much will depend on Trump's mood. Journalists write that he will expect leaders to show respect for him. Fred Fleitz added that Trump has a "hatred" for the EU, which is a risk to support the position of the Europeans.
