Pressure On Russia, The Middle East And Security: G7 Countries Issue A Joint Statement

The results of the G7 summit in Canada have been summarized.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney presented a joint statement of the G7 leaders following the G7 summit in Kananaskis, which discussed the war in Ukraine and ways to end it.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to the press service of the head of the Canadian government.

The purpose of the event was to strengthen the economy, enhance security, accelerate the digital transition, strengthen partnerships in response to global challenges, achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, and commit to stability in the Middle East.

"Leaders recognized the link between the crises in Ukraine, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region," the statement said.

War in Ukraine

At the summit, G7 leaders expressed support for US President Donald Trump's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

"They recognized that Ukraine has committed to an unconditional ceasefire and agreed that Russia must do the same. The G7 leaders are determined to explore all options to maximize pressure on Russia, including financial sanctions," the statement said.

The G7 leaders discussed support for a strong and sovereign Ukraine, including defense spending and support for the country's recovery and reconstruction.

Middle East

The summit reaffirmed a commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. The G7 leaders exchanged views on the development of the situation after the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023 and the active phase of the conflict between Israel and Iran. They also discussed the importance of unimpeded humanitarian aid to Gaza, the release of all hostages and a permanent ceasefire.

"They reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense and made clear that Iran can never have nuclear weapons," the statement noted.

Secure Indo-Pacific

The G7 stressed the importance of a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific region. They discussed the growing economic cooperation with the region. The importance of constructive and stable relations with China was emphasized. The G7 leaders called on China to refrain from destabilizing activities in the East and South China Seas, and expressed concern over the DPRK's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

Other points of the joint statement of the G7 leaders:

discussed the need for economic and financial stability, technological innovation;

disputed foreign interference, stressing the unacceptable threat to rights and freedoms;

emphasized the importance of continuous cooperation to ensure border security.
