Tallinn is preparing for aggression.
Estonian authorities have started building the first section of the Baltic Defense Zone - a defense line on the border with Russia, writes ERR.
By the fall of 2025, the country's Defense Forces in cooperation with the National Defense Investment Center (RKIK) plan to build up to 28 bunkers and ten storage facilities, as well as equip up to four kilometers of anti-tank ditches, said Armin Siilivask, a representative of the Estonian Nuclear Energy Institute, which is responsible for creating the fortification line.
Now, trenches four meters wide and two meters deep are being dug on the border strip in accordance with the needs of the Defense Forces. "The anti-tank ditch stops the enemy, it slows down his actions, and when he makes a passage in the trench, it becomes a very good target for our weapons," said Lieutenant Colonel Ainar Afanasiev, commander of the Defense Forces Division Engineering Department.
The network of defensive structures will become part of the border infrastructure and will help secure the border in peacetime. "It's still a deep ditch. It is to some extent a delay and a time gain so that we can [in case of a threat] react to an event," the head of the Piusa cordon of the Estonian Police and Border Guard Department, Romet Niilus, told Romet Niilus.
