Powell has served as head of the Federal Reserve since February 2018.
US President Donald Trump said he would "probably" consider firing Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell, whom he called a "complete and utter idiot" for his decision to leave interest rates unchanged.
This is according to a post by the US leader on ruth Social .
Trump has repeatedly criticized Powell - whom he himself appointed during his first term as president - for not lowering rates fast enough.
In April, Trump assured that he had no intention of firing Powell, whose term expires in May 2026, but hinted at a possible change of heart.
"Maybe, just maybe, I'll have to change my mind about firing him? Whatever the case, his term is almost over!" - Trump stated.
Powell has previously said he would not resign even if Trump asked him to. The two had a private meeting at the White House last month.
Trump also called Powell a "fool" and an "obvious Trump hater," noting that he tried to influence him in various ways - "being kind, neutral and angry, but nothing worked."
It should be noted that Powell has served as head of the Federal Reserve since February 5, 2018.
