Iran's parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a quarter of the world's oil product traffic passes, following US strikes on nuclear facilities, member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Ismail Koussari said, Press TV reports. He specified that the final decision on this issue will be made by the National Security Council of the country. In turn, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Naval Forces Brigadier General Alireza Tangsiri said that the Strait of Hormuz "will be closed in a few hours," TRHaber writes.
An earlier such proposal was voiced by an adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Hosein Shariatmadari. He called for blocking one of the world's key oil trade routes to U.S., British, German and French shipping, and advocated missile strikes on U.S. Navy ships based in Bahrain. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi allowed the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The Defense Ministry also issued such a warning, stressing that oil tankers would no longer pass through this route to Europe.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and on to the open ocean. About a quarter of the world's daily seaborne trade in oil and petroleum products from Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates is transported through it, Bloomberg wrote. The Financial Times estimated the figure at 21 percent. After the US attack on facilities in Iran, 17 oil tankers immediately left the Persian Gulf, Marine Traffic data shows. Another 37 vessels stood in front of the Strait of Hormuz, trying to assess the danger.
