More than 400 kilograms of potentially enriched uranium have disappeared after US airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites. The IAEA insists on urgent inspections to clarify the situation.
According to Fox News.
On June 22, the U.S. struck three important Iranian nuclear sites - in Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan. After that, nearly 900 pounds (more than 400 kilograms) of enriched uranium disappeared without a trace.
Now the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, is tasked with finding that uranium.
"We have no information about its whereabouts. Our task is to account for every gram of uranium," Grossi emphasized on Fox News.
Serious damage to facilities
Grossi said the strike on Natanz severely damaged one of the rooms where centrifuges are housed.
Isfahan was also damaged, but it was not yet possible to fully assess the extent.
Iranian officials said they had taken "protective measures" before the attacks, probably referring to the evacuation of materials - but exactly where they were taken is not known.
Nuclear weapons questions remain open
Despite Iranian claims that it has no plans to build nuclear weapons, the IAEA cannot confirm the "entirely peaceful" nature of the program.
Grossi said that even with uranium enriched to 60% (rather than the 90% needed for a weapon), the lack of verification is a serious concern.
"Iran has an obligation to report all materials. And we have to get access for verification. It's time to find out," Grossi emphasized.
