The meeting lasted more than 40 min.
The presidents of Ukraine and the United States Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump met on the margins of the NATO summit, which is held today in the Netherlands. This is reported by the own correspondent unian.net in The Hague. This information was confirmed to journalists by presidential spokesman Sergey Nikiforov.
This is the first talks between the leaders in the last 2 months. The last time Zelensky saw Trump was at the Vatican, in April of this year. Both traveled there for the funeral of Pope Francis.
Their meeting at the G7 summit in Canada earlier in June never took place due to Trump's early departure amid escalation in the Middle East.
According to a correspondent of the Ukrainian publication, the meeting between Zelensky and Trump lasted more than 40 minutes. At its conclusion, the press was not allowed to see the leaders and no statements were made.
Trump commented on the meeting with the Ukrainian president during his speech at the Alliance Summit in The Hague.
"I just wanted to see how he was doing. It was actually very pleasant. You know, we've had a little bit of difficulties, but he's been very nice at times. I think he'd like it to be over. I think so," Trump said.
He said he realized during his meeting with Zelensky that the latter "would like it to be over." Trump believes now is "a very good time to end it."
"I think it's a very good time to end the war. And if I can, I'll talk to Putin about whether we can end the war. They (Ukrainians, - ed.) are brave people, Zelensky is reclaiming his state. It's a very difficult battle he's fighting, but he's very successful in it," Trump said.
Zelensky, in turn, commented on the meeting with the U.S. president on Telegram.
He said that during the conversation they "covered all the really significant issues."
"I thank Mr. President, thank the United States. Talked about how to achieve a ceasefire and real peace. Talked about how to protect our people.
"Appreciate the attention and the willingness to help bring peace closer. Details - later," Zelensky wrote.
