United Nations countries voted in favor of Latvia's election to the Security Council for 2026 and 2027. This is reported by Delfi.
The vote took place at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York. It was the first time Latvia had run for the seat and was the only candidate from Eastern Europe. Latvia was competing with Montenegro until January 31, but withdrew its candidacy.
Latvia has promised to help strengthen cooperation among UN member states, various organizations and the public to achieve peace and security. The country believes the UN should focus on preventing conflicts, protecting civilians during wars and peacefully resolving disputes.
Riga also wants the UN Security Council to be more responsible, transparent and clearly harmonize its actions.
