Socintern Presents Nikolai Statkevich With The Peña Gomez Prize

  • 4.06.2025, 20:12

The leader of the Belarusian opposition is one of the symbols of the struggle for democracy in the world.

The Council of the Socialist International decided to award the leader of the Belarusian opposition, political prisoner, head of the party "Narodnaya Hramada" Nikola Statkevich with the José Francisco Peña Gomez prize.

At the Socintern meeting in Istanbul, which took place May 23 -25, the award was presented to two of the organization's leaders who are political prisoners - Nikolai Statkevich from Belarus and Temirlan Sultanbekov from Kyrgyzstan.

"There is no telling how the revolution would have gone in 2020 if Statkevich had remained free. Maybe our revolution would have turned into a real resistance and a movement to demolish the regime," said Radye Racyja acting chairman of Narodnaya Hramada Evgeny Vilsky.

We recall that the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Nikolai Statkevich, was detained on May 31, 2020, five years ago, two months before the "elections."

After 1.5 years, in December 2021, he was sentenced to 14 years in a special regime colony. The political prisoner is serving his sentence in Hluboko colony. Since February 2023 there is no information about him.

Nikola Statkevich is kept in the colony in the most severe conditions: the politician is kept in solitary confinement in dangerous conditions. In detention, Nikolai Statkevich contracted COVID-19 several times.

The editor-in-chief of the Charter97.org website Natalia Radina demanded the Belarusian authorities to refute the information received from several sources about the possible death in prison of Nikolai Statkevich.

"Show Nikolai Statkevich, if he is alive, to his nearest and dearest person - Marina Adamovich. Allow them a visit or at least a video call!

Otherwise, your silence will mean that the sources are right and the death of another political prisoner is on the conscience of Lukashenko and his punishers," said Natalia Radina.

The campaign "Show Statkevich to the people!

A number of European politicians have joined the campaign "Show Statkevich to the people!"

We would like to remind that the member of the European Parliament from Lithuania Piatras Auštryavicius nominated the leader of the Belarusian opposition Nikolai Statkevich for the Nobel Peace Prize.
