News resources and the Foreign Ministry's website were not working.
On the morning of Saturday, June 7, North Korea experienced a massive internet outage. North Korea's main news websites and the Foreign Ministry website were inaccessible.
This was reported by UK-based researcher Junade Ali, who monitors the North Korean Internet, the information was confirmed by Reuters.
It is noted that the cause may be internal rather than a cyberattack.
"There is a major internet disruption in North Korea right now that is affecting all routes, whether they go through China or Russia," the researcher said.
He said North Korea's entire internet infrastructure is not showing up in systems that can track internet activity.
"It's hard to say whether it's intentional or accidental, but it seems to be an internal problem rather than an attack," Ali summarized.
The Internet in North Korea is one of the most restricted and controlled in the world. Only a select few have access to the global network, while the majority of the population uses a domestic network called Gwangmyeon, which is accessible only through phone lines or computer labs and contains only government websites, educational resources and e-mail, and is completely isolated from the global Internet. The global Internet is accessible only to high-ranking officials, researchers and foreigners, and is subject to strict monitoring.
