Britain And Germany Are Preparing A Defense Treaty On Mutual Assistance

It is expected to be signed on July 17.

Britain and Germany are preparing to sign a wide-ranging cooperation pact that would include a clause on mutual assistance in the event of a threat to either country.

This is reported by Politico.

Prime Minister Kir Starmer and former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz laid the groundwork for the pact in a joint declaration last summer, pledging closer cooperation on peace and security as well as economic growth.

When the pact will be signed

The text of the pact is close to being finalized, two London officials said. It is expected to be signed on July 17 before the two countries' parliaments go on summer recess.

The treaty between Stahrmer and Merz is the result of 18 rounds of negotiations, three of which took place in person in Berlin and two in London.

Defense sections of the pact

The key sections include a clause on defense, which is based on the Trinity House Agreement signed last year. It, in turn, stipulates that any strategic threat to one country will pose a threat to the other.

The new treaty could give Germany a mutual assistance clause with both European nuclear powers, in line with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's desire to strengthen the continent's deterrent capabilities separate from the United States.

Although the treaty is likely to reaffirm both countries' commitment to NATO as the cornerstone of their collective defense, the inclusion of the clause underscores the European allies' desire for closer security cooperation without relying on the United States.

The document is expected to spell out further measures to combat illegal migration, transportation, research and innovation.
