More and more people in Germany are in favor of a return to universal conscription. According to a Deutschlandtrend poll released Thursday, July 3, 73 percent of respondents, that is three out of every four, believe that Germany needs more soldiers to defend the country in case of emergency, Deutsche Welle reported.

Almost two-thirds (62 percent) expressed the view that Germany should be prepared for war to ensure peace in Europe. At the same time, a majority (57%) agreed with the statement: "It scares me how flippantly they talk about combat readiness in Germany."

55% were explicitly in favor of compulsory military and civilian service, the same for women and men - up 10% from April. Another 18% favored the return of conscription for men only. Almost a quarter (23%) believe that military and civilian conscription should remain suspended - a provision that has been in place in the Federal Republic of Germany since 2011.
