Fire At VNIIR-Progress: Drones Attacked A Key Electronics Plant In Russia

New details of the successful strike.

On the night of July 5, strike drones attacked the production shop of the VNIIR-Progress enterprise in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic of the Russian Federation. The hit started a fire in the shop where electronic components are made.

The attack was confirmed by the head of the republic, Oleg Nikolayev, who said emergency services responded quickly and localized the fire. He said production in the building had allegedly been suspended since a previous strike in June.

"One drone landed on the roof of the vacant building of VNIIR JSC, where production has been suspended since the previous attack in June this year, the second damaged a warehouse under construction on Lapsarsky proezd," Nikolaev said.

What VNIIR-Progress was doing

According to Militarny, this enterprise is part of the ABS Elektro association and is considered a key manufacturer of the Kometa series of antennas. These devices are used in Russian strike drones, including Shahed kamikaze drones, as well as in Iskander-M and Kalibr missiles.

Besides antennas, the plant produces GNSS receivers for GLONASS, GPS and Galileo navigation systems, as well as software and hardware complexes for shipbuilding and power engineering. The list of products includes SCADA-systems, programmable electric drives, SDR-radio complexes, electronic modules and components of integrated microelectronics (VLSI).

The enterprise plays a special role in meeting the needs of the Russian Navy: VNIIR-Progress supplies electrical equipment, including relays, automata and modules for nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M project.
